The Rose corner & Box parterre
Replanting an overgrown corner into a formal scheme
I was asked by a client to design and plant a more formal garden area for a part of the garden that had become overgrown with no identity. The client liked Buxus
and Rosa
so a parterre was the ideal solution.
The area had an existing Olive tree which was kept, but all other planting was removed, inc;luring an old rose that I managed to transplant to a pot. There was box towards the back which became part of the Buxus hedging scheme.
The area was on a steep incline so building wooded bedding supports was essential in preventing all the plants and soil eventually sliding south! This allowed the soil to be level, but the box hedging obscured the bulk of the wooden supports from sight.
The half-standard rose bushes are of course the main attraction, but are under planted are Veronica , Calamintha and Alchemical . The other existing plants in the garden replicate their colours and form. They will die back in the winter giving an opportunity for spring bulbs to bring in a change of season colour. The area has Narcissi and tulipa. I’ve included two climbing roses to partially cover the back fence.
It's obviously not at it's best now but should give a fantastic show from spring. the Veronica for instance should grow to a hight of 1m, and the Calamintha will bush out, both filling the area under the roses.
